Denmark is closing colleges, high schools, bars and restaurants

Colleges, high schools, bars, cafes and restaurants will close in 38 Danish municipalities, including Copenhagen and the country’s two other largest cities, to contain the surge in cases of the new coronavirus, the Prime Minister announced on Monday.

«Linfection is too high and the situation is too worrying. Therefore, we must take measures to control the infection and therefore the epidemic ”, justified at a press conference Mette Frederiksen, who calls on the Danes not to celebrate Christmas or the New Year with more than ten.

As in spring, middle and high school students find online education, from Wednesday, when bars, cafes and restaurants must remain closed – except for take-out.

Libraries, sports halls and cinemas and theaters must also lower the curtain.

These restrictions are valid until January 3 in order to control the increase in cases described as “exponential” by the Minister of Health, Magnus Heunicke.

Health authorities on Monday recorded a daily record of 2,046 cases in 24 hours, according to the Danish Infectious Disease Control Authority. The cases could according to the health authorities to approach 4,000 dailies by Christmas in this country of 5.8 million inhabitants, reported the public television DR.

Mette Frederiksen had mentioned as early as Sunday evening a “targeted and geographical semi-containment”, during a video speech broadcast on social networks.

These measures concern the most affected areas of the Scandinavian country, Copenhagen and its suburbs, as well as the two other main cities of Denmark, Aarhus (west) and Odense (center), which concentrate almost half of the inhabitants of the Nordic kingdom.

Denmark, which is struggling to curb the increase in the number of cases, had already announced Tuesday to lower the gauge of extracurricular activities from 50 to 10 and called for further expanding teleworking in the Copenhagen region to try to curb contagions.

These measures followed a first series of restrictions taken at the end of October at the start of the second wave hitting Europe, which are maintained until February 28.
