Dengue Outbreak in Timika with 14 New Cases Detected in One Week

TIMIKA, cornerpapua.id – In just one week, 14 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) were found in the working area of the Wania Health Center, namely on Jalan Budi Utomo Ujung, Jalan Hasanuddin and Kelurahan Kamoro Jaya (SP 1). DHF was also found in Timika Jaya Village (SP 2).

Head of the Mimika Health Service’s Infectious Disease Control Section, Kamaludin, Thursday (8/6/2023) said that if in the past two weeks there were 28 cases of dengue fever, this week the cases have increased to 14 cases.

Dengue patients of all ages. But most experienced adults aged 19-45 years. There are also babies less than one year old.

DHF, said Kamaludin, is caused by the bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Especially now that the rainfall in Timika is quite high which results in many puddles which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

To break the chain of transmission, the 3M method is carried out, namely draining, burying and closing water storage areas. This is because the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in clean water such as bathtubs, water reservoirs, used tires and others.

“At least once a week the water reservoir must be drained and closed so that the larvae do not become mosquitoes,” he explained.

Kamaluddin appealed to people who experience symptoms of DHF such as high fever and the appearance of red spots on Maja’s body should immediately carry out an examination at a clinic, health center or hospital. First aid can be given by administering fever-reducing drugs.
