Dengue Fever Outbreak in Bangladesh: Highest Death Rate in 23 Years

Dengue fever has killed thousands of people in the South Asian country of Bangladesh, bringing the death rate resulting from the disease to its highest level in 23 years, according to what Al-Arabiya satellite channel reported in a brief report presenting the repercussions of the spread of the disease in Bangladesh.

Dengue fever in Bangladesh

The report stated that dengue fever, which recently spread in Bangladesh, has caused, from the beginning of this year until now, the death of more than 1,000 people and the infection of 209,000 others.

He pointed out that the main reason for the high death rate from dengue fever in Bangladesh is the different symptoms among those infected with the disease, and the lack of specific symptoms for it, in addition to the fact that they are symptoms similar to those of influenza, according to the opinion of doctors.

Doctors also explained that one of the most important reasons for the outbreak of the disease in Bangladesh is the discharge of infected people from hospitals without completing their recovery, which increases the chances of infection and transmission of the disease to others.

The danger of dengue fever

Outbreak in Bangladesh

The director of a hospital in Bangladesh explained that the risk of the disease increases when it is infected two or three times, as the patient has developed complex dengue syndrome, which ultimately results in death in most cases.

It should be noted that the disease infects humans through mosquito bites, specifically mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species, which breed in stagnant and polluted water.

Symptoms of dengue fever

The Al Arabiya report revealed the symptoms of dengue fever observed in those infected with the disease, which vary between:

– Thousands of back, joints and above the eyes.

– Fever.

– Vomiting.

– Swelling of the prostate.

– rash.

– headache.

– Severe bleeding may occur in advanced stages of the disease.

Dengue fever in Egypt

It is worth noting that dengue fever spread last July in Upper Egypt, infecting hundreds of people, coinciding with the extreme heat waves that the Upper Egypt governorates witnessed in the summer of this year.

To control the disease at that time, the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population ordered the necessity of cleaning water tanks periodically, using plastic tanks instead of dilapidated metal ones, and disposing of garbage promptly.

The Ministry of Health also directed the necessity of using insecticides in external containers, periodically cleaning swimming pools, and getting rid of any stagnant water inside and outside homes, considering stagnant water is the strongest attractant to Aedes aegypti.
