Record champion THW Kiel has stopped its negative series and achieved an important victory in the LIQUI MOLY HBL. After three competitive games without a win, the Zebras defeated promoted ASV Hamm-Westfalen 37:24 (17:9) on Tuesday evening and moved up to second place in the table. With 16:4 points, Kiel is again within striking distance of leader Füchse Berlin (17:3).
After the THW suffered a defeat against TBV Lemgo Lippe on Saturday, the people from Kiel started the game with corresponding anger in their stomachs. And you noticed that immediately! With a 5-0 start, the Zebras quickly put their stamp on the game. Only in the eighth minute was ASV Hamm-Westfalen able to net for the first time through Jan von Boenigk.
But the German record champions didn’t let that shake them and continued to extend their lead, so that the score at half-time was 9:17. One person in particular dominated the first half: Niklas Landin! the THW keeper brought the Westphalians to the brink of despair. The Dane made nine saves and saved 59% of the ball in the first half of the game. And while the world handball player nailed his box at the back, pivot Patrick Wiencek kept scoring in front!
ASV Hamm-Westfalen found their way into the second half a little better and the game increasingly developed into a high-speed running game. But although the ASV was successful up front, the Westphalians still couldn’t find a solution in defense. The circle game of Kiel with Patrick Wiencek worked again and again and the backcourt of the THW was increasingly in the mood to shoot.
Too many technical mistakes and wasted chances in attack ultimately prevented the newly promoted team from Hamm from coming within striking distance of the strong Kiel team, and they finally separated with a result of 24:37. The best thrower of the game was Patrick Wiencek with a strong seven goals.
