The Democrats have achieved victory in the field of abortion legislation in several states a year before the American presidential elections.

They achieved results in particular in the state of Ohio: a proposal to preserve abortion rights was adopted in a referendum with 56 percent of the votes. That marks a major victory for Democrats, as Ohio still voted conservative in the 2020 election. Trump won the state by 8 percentage points at the time.

Ohio is the seventh state to adopt abortion rights through a referendum since the Supreme Court struck down national abortion rights last year. Since then, states have had to decide on the legislation themselves and many Republican states have severely restricted the right to the intervention.

On the other hand, there are a number of referendums that go in the direction of the Democrats. Last year, a majority also voted in favor of abortion rights in a referendum in Kansas, a staunchly Republican state. Pro-abortion supporters were also in the majority in California, Vermont, Michigan and Kentucky.

In the latter state there was again something to celebrate for the Democrats last night. Although Kentucky went to the Republicans by as much as 26 percentage points in the 2020 presidential election, Democratic Governor Beshear was re-elected last night after a pro-abortion campaign.

In Virginia, the Democrats managed to retain their majority in the Senate and take over the majority in the House of Representatives from the Republicans. Their campaign was also mainly focused on preserving abortion rights.

The results of the referendum in Ohio are being watched with interest in Arizona and Missouri. Those states are also considering holding a referendum next year.
