Mayor Bart Tommelein (Open VLD) issued a ban on magnet fishing for safety reasons 3 weeks ago, at the latest and largest find. He asked DOVO to inspect the ponds and get rid of the leftover ammunition.
After the First World War, a lot of ammunition was dumped in the ponds of the park to render it harmless, but much explosive is still active. There would even be phosphorus bombs on the bottom. “A dangerous situation,” says the mayor. “Phosphorus bombs can ignite on their own. Such a fire also proves difficult to extinguish. Therefore, we hope that the mine clearance service can make our ponds completely bomb and grenade free.”
