According to the head of the laboratory of biotechnology and molecular virology at the University of Cyprus Leontios Kostrikis, the new strain has a genetic basis like Delta. At the same time, the scientist noted, the variant has such mutations as the “Omicron”.
Kostrikis added that as a result of the research, it was possible to find a significant number of mutations that were previously detected only during cases of infection with Omicron. According to the scientist, 30 mutations were identified in this variant, 10 of which were identified in Cyprus.
He also clarified that the researchers named the new strain “Deltacron”. This option was found in 25 patients with coronavirus, of which 11 are hospitalized, and 14 are being treated at home.
