Delivery problems and too high prices: half of the construction companies had to close the construction site recently | Economy

Half of the construction companies have already had to suspend their activities for a short time due to problems with supply, price of materials or at the request of the customer. Het Laatste Nieuws is the first to know. “The most worrying thing is that the problems are not solved and are likely to worsen further,” said Niko Demeester, CEO of Embuild, the former Confederation of Construction.

The organization interviewed 317 contractors and installers. It became clear that 53% of construction companies have already had to suspend their activities, albeit almost always for a short period. 4 out of 10 contractors and installers do this due to problems with the delivery of building materials. A fourth cites the prices of materials as a reason and a third suspends the work at the request of the client.

“There is still a lot of activity on the construction sites, but things are not going very well everywhere,” says Demeester. “Sometimes a site is closed for a day or a week, sometimes for a longer period. However, there are still problems with building materials whose supplies and prices sometimes jump. Sometimes we also see that individuals hesitate to proceed. They see energy prices rising and believe purchasing power is decreasing. You feel there are trust issues with the customer. We will succeed, but we notice that the construction companies do not expect the problems to decrease, but will increase ».

Due to expensive energy, the price of bricks, tiles, steel and concrete is rising rapidly. The construction company cannot always pass on this additional cost to the customer. “Furthermore, 55% of construction companies fear that they will have to temporarily suspend one or more construction sites in the next three months due to delivery problems, 42% due to excessive prices of materials, 38% at the request of the customer and 31% due to high energy prices, ”says Demeester.
