A newly developed teat continuously monitors the electrolyte levels in the blood of premature babies. Until now, this has been measured by taking blood from these babies twice a day, but it can be dangerous. This brings back Vakblad Early.

The teat measures the amount of potassium and sodium in the baby’s saliva. Measurements are automatically forwarded to healthcare professionals via Bluetooth.

The results are as reliable as those of the blood samples. However, premature babies benefit from as few invasive treatments as possible, so this new teat is a welcome alternative to blood collection.
