Deconfinement: Quebecers will now have to immunize themselves against COVID-19

To avoid a second wave of the epidemic, Quebecers must gradually come out of their confinement to immunize themselves against COVID-19.

François Legault transformed himself into a pedagogue on Thursday to explain to citizens who have been confined to their homes for more than a month that Quebec has reached the stage of “natural immunity”.

“What we have done in the past month is to slow the spread (…) by asking people to stay at home. (…) There must be an immunity that develops in the coming months, said the Prime Minister, weighing each of his words. You can’t ask people to stay at home for two years. ”

People least at risk of complications from a coronavirus infection, such as children and young adults, should be the first to immunize and develop antibodies.

But in this collective immunization exercise, the people most vulnerable to the disease must be protected. “That means people who are 60 and over, therefore, who currently account for 97% of deaths,” he insisted.

To skeptics and fearful, François Legault replied that the worst thing to do would be to stay confined for another few months to come out of our homes all at the same time in the fall. A time of year when the seasonal flu virus is active. The epidemic would then hit the health network, which would quickly be overloaded.

“We could imagine, at that time, a wave that would be larger than the wave we have known for a month. So we have to take advantage of the coming months, by the fall, to gradually start to deconfinate. ”

According to the Dr Horacio Arruda, if COVID-19 hit hard in CHSLDs, only a small part of the population has been in contact with the virus. Between 5 and 10% of Quebecers are currently immunized against the disease.

For a population to neutralize the coronavirus, between 60% and 80% of citizens must be immunized, added the National Director of Public Health.
