Austria announced on Sunday that it will force some Germans living in an area affected by a coronavirus outbreak to test negative for Covid-19 in order to be allowed to cross the border.
“We are following a common line,” said Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober on the ORF channel, when asked about the possibility of turning back tourists from the canton of Gütersloh in western Germany.
He said these people will have to show a test that is less than 48 hours old. Containment has been applied again since Wednesday in this canton of 360,000 inhabitants, located in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The canton of Warendorf exempt
On the other hand, the measure does not concern another German canton which also had to undergo a restructuring, that of Warendorf, because the number of new cases quickly decreased there.
Germany, previously relatively untouched by the virus, has discovered a major source of contamination in the slaughterhouse of the Tönnies group, which employs 6,700 people. Many employees come from Bulgaria and Romania and live in workers’ homes.
On June 22, local authorities announced that 1,553 people were infected with Covid-19 in the canton of Gütersloh, the vast majority without symptoms. Of this total, 21 were hospitalized and six were in intensive care.
