Fewer and fewer unemployed people are out of work for a long time, according to one analysis by Statistics Netherlands. Ten years ago, one in three unemployed people was unemployed for at least a year. Now that is only one in seven.

In the second quarter of this year, 348,000 people in the Netherlands were unemployed, more than half less than ten years ago. The number of long-term unemployed even fell by 80 percent. There are now 47,000, the lowest number in ten years.

The long-term unemployed are getting older

On average, the group of unemployed is now younger than ten years ago. In the second quarter of 2023, 48 percent of them were under the age of 25, while this was still 38 percent in 2013.

The average age among the long-term unemployed has risen. The share of over-45s increased from 56 to 62 percent in ten years. Only 8 percent of the long-term unemployed are younger than 25 years.

Education level rises

The unemployed are also on average increasingly highly educated. This applies to the entire population, but it is even more visible among the unemployed. The share of higher vocational education and academics among the unemployed rose from 20 to 31 percent. The increase is greatest among the long-term unemployed: from 23 to 40 percent.
