Debate heats up over inclusion of players in India’s Asia Cup squad

Mumbai: When India’s 17-member squad for the Asia Cup was announced, the cricket world discussed the omission of Malayalee player Sanju Samson and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Malayalee player Sanju Samson was included as a reserve player in the Asia Cup team due to a slight injury to the wicket-keeper batsman KL Rahul.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya’s back-up in the squad for the Asia Cup is Shardul Thakur. But former Indian player Gautam Gambhir said that Shardul can never replace Hardik and the selection committee should have considered Shivam Dubey instead of Thakur. The player who should have been considered for the all-rounder position in the Asia Cup team was Shivam Dubey. Because he is in great shape. In any case, a player who can replace Hardik was needed in the team. But it was never Shardul Thakur. Because Shardul can never bat like Hardik. Therefore, Shardul can never be Hardik’s back-up, Gambhir said in a discussion on Star Sports.

But former Indian player and chief selector Sunil Joshi, who participated in the discussion, disagreed with Gambhir’s opinion. Sunil Joshi said Dubey needs to improve a lot in bowling and fielding if he is to be considered as a complete all-rounder like Hardak. Shivam Dubey has so far scored runs in T20 cricket. But ODI cricket is completely different from this. With all due respect to Gambhir, Shivam Dubey is not a replacement for Hardik as he still needs to improve in fielding and bowling, said Sunil Joshi.

But Gambhir said that India could have included an extra spinner in the bowling team. It could be Chahal or Ravi Bishnoi. Gambhir said that the current bowling line-up is one-way bowling and four pacers are not needed in the team and instead a wrist spinner could have been included in the team.
