Death toll from crash with military plane Ukraine rose to 26

The number of deaths from a plane crash in eastern Ukraine has risen to 26. Initially, 2 of the 27 passengers survived the disaster, but one of them died in hospital last night.

On board were twenty air force officers in training and a crew of seven. It was a training flight.

It is still unclear what caused the military transport plane, an Antonov An-26, to crash. Shortly before the crash, the pilot asked if he could land at an airport near the city of Kharkov, after one of the two turboprop engines had failed. Five minutes later the plane crashed. It burned out along a highway.

The Ukrainian authorities say they are investigating four scenarios: technical malpractice, crew negligence, a fault in the aircraft’s control system and poor maintenance.

Ukrainian President Zelensky wrote on Facebook that he marks today as a day of national mourning. He also visited the crash site and announced that the entire An-26 fleet will be grounded until the investigation into the crash is completed.
