Being pregnant is something special. A new person is growing in your belly, but during pregnancy ailments such as gestational sciatica can occur. Ellis is a mother of two children and has had to deal with this in both pregnancies.

What is it?

When you are pregnant, a lot changes in your body. This not only affects your abdomen, but also the organs around it, including the nerves. The longest nerve in the body is the sciatica. This runs from your spinal cord to your foot. With gestational sciatica there is too much pressure on the roots of the sciatic nerve. Hormones make your joints more flexible, which means your nerves are more likely to become pinched and the risk of this pregnancy ailment increases. This may possibly result in the following complaints.

  • Backache
  • Cramps in the muscles
  • Burning and weak feeling in your legs
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tingling in your legs, feet or toes
  • Pain that suddenly shoots from top to bottom

‘The pain radiated from my back to my legs’

Ellis started experiencing a lot of back pain during her first pregnancy at 23 weeks. During her second pregnancy this was already after 17 weeks. “The pain radiated from my back to my legs. Occasionally I even had to ask people on the bus to help me get up,” says Ellis. She also indicates that while she was sleeping a pain could suddenly shoot through her back, which caused sleeping problems. In Ellis’ case, gestational sciatica was partly due to retroversion (a tilted uterus).

What can be done about it?

These complaints disappear completely after pregnancy, but the pain remains annoying. There are several things you can do to alleviate the pain, such as doing exercises to gain more strength and flexibility in your back muscles. If there is really a lot of pain, ultrasound therapy, laser therapy or electrical stimulation can be used.
