Deadly Flooding in New York: State of Emergency Declared as More Storms Expected

The images are impressive, the consequences already terrible. Heavy rains caused very significant and dangerous flooding on Sunday in the state of New York (northeast), transforming the streets into a torrent, washing away bridges and leading the governor to declare a state of emergency.

A woman was killed as she tried to leave her home with her dog in the Hudson Valley, swept away by a flash flood, have reported several media.

More storms expected on Monday

Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and in Ontario County, in the center of the state, noting that up to 200mm of rain had created “life-threatening conditions due to flash flooding”. “We are approaching a tipping point in this weather event,” she said.

As of Sunday evening, more than 12,000 customers had been without power, according to his office, as heavy rains washed away roads and trapped people in their cars or homes. As of 8 p.m. (2 a.m. French time), highways were closed in at least five counties in the state, including Westchester, which is just north of New York and borders the Hudson River.

The governor’s office said the state should expect more storms on Monday.
