Deadly drama about Air India Express probably due to pilot error | Abroad

21 deadThe fatal accident involving an Air India Express plane in India last year is believed to have been caused by human error. Investigators conclude that, among other things, the pilot failed to perform a standard procedure for potentially dangerous landings.

An Air India Express Boeing-737 skidded off the runway in the southern city of Kozhikode in August 2020. The aircraft then broke in two. 21 people on board were killed and 110 others were injured. On board were Indians who were repatriated from Dubai because of the corona pandemic.

The pilot made a total of two landing attempts because it was raining and windy. The first attempt was aborted, the second failed. Another factor that investigators say may have contributed to the accident is the lack of equipment for pilots to calculate accurate landing data in adverse weather conditions.

Faults

The researchers believe that mistakes have also been made within the Indian airline. The pilot training program was not “effective” enough and management policies resulted in “deficiencies at various levels causing repeated human error”.
