De Jonge: from May 11 tests with visits to nursing homes

“I am now working on a proposal for the visiting arrangement, on which I would like to ask the Outbreak Management Team for advice on Monday 4 May,” says De Jonge. That team of medical experts advises the cabinet on how to reduce the coronavirus.

Next Wednesday, May 6, De Jonge will then make a decision. And then on May 11, a pilot can start of a group of nursing homes ‘that is ahead of the rest of the country’. “We must first see how this works in practice.”

Since March 20, there is a strict ban on visits to nursing homes, due to the coronavirus outbreak. Visitors are only allowed to visit those who are dying. Maintaining a total visit ban is not acceptable, according to De Jonge.

A spokesman for the ministry was unable to provide further details because the plan is still ‘in the thinking phase’.

According to De Jonge, relaxation can only be done at a nursing home where there are no infections. “That is an important condition, because then you know that the location is able to strictly observe the hygiene measures.” The number of visitors will probably initially have to be limited to one per resident.
