David Holmes: The Untold Story of Harry Potter’s Stuntman and Daniel Radcliffe’s Friend

Although Daniel Radcliffe is the face of the Harry Potter film franchise, Essex-born David Holmes is the man fans see performing blood-curdling scenes – from flying on a broomstick to Harry Potter and Voldemort’s battles.

In 2000, then-promising gymnast David Holmes was chosen as actor Daniel Radcliffe’s stuntman for the very first Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone film. He was only 18 years old.

Film after film, he befriended the cast and crew, especially young Radcliffe, who treated him like an older brother. “I got to hang out with this cool, older kid who taught me how to jump backwards,” recalls Radcliffe.

But Holmes’ life suddenly changed on the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in 2009.

Holmes was rehearsing for the scene in which Harry is attacked by the snake Nagini and driven into a wall. More weights were added to the triple system to make the stuntman fly faster, but the stunt didn’t go as planned – Holmes hit a wall, broke his neck and was left hanging “like a marionette on a string”.

“I remember hitting the wall, my chest going into my nose,” he said. “I was fully conscious the whole time.”
