David and Victoria Beckham’s Candid Interview: Surviving the Affair and Rebuilding Their Marriage

In the Netflix documentary ‘Beckham’, David (48) and Victoria (49) Beckham are very candid twenty years later about David Beckham’s illustrious affair with the Spanish-Dutch Rebecca Loos, the assistant and nanny of ‘Becks’ in Madrid. The deep crisis in 2003 almost meant the end of the fairytale marriage, but the two found each other again. “We both felt at the time that we were not losing each other, but drowning.”

Lots of beautiful people in London’s Curzon Mayfair, the festive scene of the premiere of the Netflix documentary Beckham on Tuesday evening. It is about Becks’ life from childhood to his current role as co-owner of Inter Miami. But at the center is the happy family, including their four children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, as well as Brooklyn’s wife and actress Nicola Peltz and Romeo’s model friend Mia Regan. Although the documentary shows that this family happiness also hung by a thread for a while.

The period in Madrid was the most difficult in the Beckhams’ lives. In the last of the documentary’s four episodes, Victoria fights back tears when she is questioned about her husband’s affair with Rebecca Loos. “It felt like the world was against us,” she says. “Until Madrid it was always us against the world. We were together, we were connected and had each other. But when we were in Spain, it didn’t feel like we had each other anymore. And that’s sad. I can barely tell you how difficult that was. And how it influenced me.”

Scandal story

While the world was at the feet of David Beckham, as a great football star at Real Madrid, the now disappeared newspaper ‘The News Of The World’ came up with the scandal story about David and his personal assistant. ‘Posh Spice’ had decided to stay in Britain so that her sons Brooklyn and Romeo could continue to go to school. That decision left Beckham lonely and he admits he struggled.

“When I first moved to Spain it was difficult because I had been part of a club and a family my whole career, from the age of 15 to the age of 27,” says the former England international. “I’m sold overnight, the next minute I’m in a city, I don’t speak the language. And most importantly, I didn’t have my family. Every time we woke up we felt something was different. We both felt then that we were not losing each other, but that we were drowning.”

When asked how their marriage survived, David tells how he became afraid to play football while his wife struggled to find a way through their crisis. Shaking his head, he says: “I honestly don’t know how we got through it. Victoria is everything to me, to see her pain was incredibly difficult, but we are fighters and at that moment we had to fight for each other, we had to fight for our family.”

He realized at that time that his family was worth fighting for, but it was tough. “There were days when I woke up and thought, ‘How am I going to get to work? How do I walk onto the training field? How can I look like nothing is wrong?’ I felt physically ill every day I opened my eyes.”

It was probably, if I’m honest, the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my life.

Hate David

Ultimately, Victoria decides to join her husband in Madrid, where they bought a £3 million house that she is furnishing herself. They later had their third son Cruz, now 18, in the Spanish capital. But Victoria was never happy in Madrid. “As soon as I was able to send the children to school, we moved full-time. Did I hate David? If I’m completely honest, yes. It was probably, if I’m honest, the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my life.” She describes their time in Madrid as a ‘nightmare’ and ‘an absolute circus’.

There is great relief when the move comes to Los Angeles, where David will play for LA Galaxy. “I was so relieved to leave such a difficult situation in Spain. LA was a place where everything was so much easier. Easier to find a house, easier to find a school, you have no language barrier. So for me all my dreams came true. Finally we seemed settled.”

But David incurs the wrath of his wife when he decides to temporarily leave LA for Italy to play for AC Milan. He did that because the coach of the national team demanded it. Victoria: “What do you mean, you want to go to Milan? We just moved from one side of the world for you. I signed up for us to be in LA as a family. I didn’t expect to show up in LA and everything would be perfect and then he’d be like, ‘Oh guess what, surprise! I’m leaving again’. I respected his career, I always did, but not again. I was really upset.”

Ultimately, the two’s marriage also survived this crisis. The two have now been married for more than 25 years. “I feel happy now, I feel really satisfied now,” Victoria concludes in the Netflix documentary, which can be viewed on the streaming service from today.
