The City of Science City of Darmstadt’s magistrate has decided on the concept for parking space management in Darmstadt’s Woogsviertel.

The parking zone comprises the streets within the area south of Landgraf-Georg-Strasse (section between Teichhausstrasse and Beckstrasse) / Heinrich-Fuhr-Strasse, east of Teichhausstrasse / Nieder-Ramstädter Strasse (to Heinrichstrasse), north of Heinrichstrasse and west of Gundolfstrasse / of Breslauer Platz. The parking fees according to the parking fee statute (fee zone II) are 75 cents per 30 minutes. Due to the walking distance to the city center, the opening times are from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a maximum parking time of two hours.

“In order to reduce the high pressure to park and thus the traffic looking for a parking space in the district and to create new free space for the residents, we are now also starting the management in the Woogsviertel as part of the quarterly introduction of comprehensive parking space management,” explains Michael Kolmer, Head of Mobility.

“The Woogsviertel is a densely built-up residential area with a high population density and the usual parking practice there mostly takes place at the expense of children, people with reduced mobility or the population walking on the sidewalk. We want to and must counteract this with the introduction. To this end, we already informed the residents about future parking management by flyer on July 22, 2021. The flyer was used to inform everyone concerned about the future concept at an early stage. In addition, the residents were expressly asked to contact the Mobility Office with comments, criticism and proposed solutions (regarding the parking concept). The suggestions of the citizens will be included in the future design of the quarter ”, Kolmer continued.

The concept provides for parking ticket machines to be set up in the area. The parking ticket machines are equipped with an EC card terminal in order to offer parkers another means of payment at the machine in addition to cash. As an alternative to the parking ticket machine, mobile phone parking is offered for paying parking fees. This payment method is already offered in the city center, Bessungen Nord and the Kapellplatzviertel and is now being expanded to include the “Woogsviertel” quarter.
Registered residents of the area can apply for an exemption for parking in accordance with Paragraph 46 of the StVO for 120 euros per year. With the exemption, residents are exempted from paying parking fees at parking ticket machines and from the maximum parking time. “Visitor cards” are offered for visitors from local residents. Such “visitor cards” are already available in the Kapellplatzviertel, Bessungen Nord and around the Mathildenhöhe. Sheets with nine day tickets and one week ticket are available. These are valid for one day or one week in the parking zone. To do this, the license plate number and the date must be entered on the card and placed visibly in the vehicle. Visitors are thus exempt from paying parking fees at the parking ticket machine and from the maximum parking time. Adult residents of a parking zone can purchase sheets with nine day tickets and one week ticket from the Citizens’ Registration Office for EUR 20 each – one sheet per person per month.

“The concept does not include any changes to the current parking spaces, traffic regulations or the division of street spaces,” explains Kolmer. “A parking space reorganization in critical street sections will be implemented successively in connection with upcoming construction and renovation measures.”
