Darmstadt: Decision on ICE route is delayed

Bahn wants to check other connection options to Darmstadt’s main train station. A decision on the preferred variant of the entire new line should now be made in autumn.

Also during the ninth session of the participation forum for the planned ICE new Rhine / Main-Rhine / Neckar line, it was not announced how the city of Darmstadt should be connected to the high-speed rail line in the future. Because of the corona restrictions, participants in the forum only attended the meeting online on Monday.

The decision on a preferred variant was delayed because forum participants had submitted eight suggestions for routing around Darmstadt to the railways. The railway presented the proposals on Monday and announced that it will now examine four of the eight proposals in more detail.

For example, the proposal to forego a single-track south connection to Darmstadt Central Station and instead to build a long-distance train station in the west of the city should not be examined further. This variant enables “no link between long-distance transport and local transport in Darmstadt’s main station,” said rail project manager Jörg Ritzert. The variant would also not be compatible with the design of the “Germany clock” of the railway.

At the request of the Frankfurter Rundschau, the city of Darmstadt announced on Tuesday that it was unfortunate that the procedure was now being delayed further, so that a decision on the preferred variant should only be made by the railways in autumn. As is known, the city prefers the main variant 2, with a northern and southern connection of the main station to the new ICE line. In the south, the main train station is to be connected to the high-speed railway line through a bypass through the western forest. Although this solution is supported by the majority in the city parliament, it is controversial.

The city’s communication states that it is important that the railway no longer question the connection to Darmstadt in the north and south, but only talks about how the city will be connected to the new line. This is “a success of the persistent positioning” of the city and the region.

The company, which moderates the participation forum for the railway, announced in a message that the overall comparison of variants and the decision on the route in the Darmstadt area should now take place in the second half of this year. The overall variant decision is about whether the route in the southern section of Darmstadt should run along highways 67 or 5 and how Darmstadt should be connected to the new route. In this context, a separate connection between Darmstadt and the new line as well as the guidance of the high-speed line through the main station are being examined.
