The magistrate in Darmstadt decides the development plan for the fire brigade with a two-guard structure. There is criticism of the planned location in the south, for which allotments should give way.

After several years of planning, the Darmstadt magistrate adopted a requirements and development plan for the Darmstadt fire department. According to a message from Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) and Mayor Rafael Reisser, who is responsible for fire protection, the plan provides for two locations for the professional fire brigade and one new location for the volunteer fire brigade downtown.

The previous central fire station of the professional fire department on Bismarckstrasse is getting on in years. The buildings are partly in a dilapidated condition. And the location of the Darmstadt city center volunteer fire department, which is located in a residential building on Kasinostraße, no longer meets current requirements, especially since the rooms are now too small.

According to the magistrate’s decision, the new “Feuerwache Nord” is to be built on a commercial site in the northwest of the city, between Gräfenhäuser Strasse, Pfnorstrasse and the train tracks directly on the newly built Carl-Schenck-Ring. The “Fire Station South” is to be built in the area of Rüdesheimer Strasse, Donnersberg Ring and Karlsruher Strasse (Bundesstrasse 3). According to the city, a master plan is now to be drawn up for this area.

The area of around 30,000 square meters in the north of the city center would be large enough and would also offer space for expansion options. The area of application of the South Guard should extend to the city center and to Darmstadt-Eberstadt.

According to the ideas of the magistrate, the volunteer fire department in the city center should not be integrated into one of the two main guards. Rather, three location options on Bismarckstrasse, Sensfelder Weg and Otto-Röhm-Strasse are to be examined.

IG wants to save allotments

Mayor Partsch, in his function as chairman of the supervisory board of the Darmstadt city development company, which is responsible for planning the construction projects in coordination with the fire brigade, said that a city like Darmstadt, with its many international research institutions and companies, is growing rapidly and has a “highly qualified and well-equipped fire brigade” need. The decision for the two professional fire brigade locations was “a complex and multi-layered process”, which was characterized by very different and by no means always simple requirements and necessities. The two-guard structure can also be used to ensure that the fire department arrives on time at the respective location and that further support can be requested, said Mayor Reisser.

Criticism of the planned location in the south comes from the Interessessengemeinschaft (IG) Bessunger Kiesgrube. In a statement, IG chairman Martin Brühl criticized that the city wanted to “sacrifice” an allotment garden with all its ecological benefits for the construction of the fire station. Brühl also criticized the fact that Mayor Reisser’s “very intelligent proposal” to build the guard on the other side of the street on the former TÜV site had not been followed up because new apartments were to be built there.
