Dhe Danube was also an important economic factor in Klosterneuburg in earlier times.

The Danube has always been a lifeline and destiny for Klosterneuburg. Traffic used to be mostly on the river. It also powered the many ship mills that ground the grain. The ship millers sat in the shore communities. Many of them were “Schiffmühler” and “Bachmühler” at the same time. There were also mills along the streams – Kierling and Weidlingbach, in St. Andrä am Hagenbach. One of them, the Plannermühle am Weidlingbach, had its own small power station for its own operation before 1900.
