Six medals (two golds, one silver and three bronzes) have been obtained by the Spanish team that has participated in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) that was held during the last week of last August in Girona.

Our team was made up of Álvaro Pallás Otero (A Coruña), Oscar Castro Remesal (Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria), Júlia Soler (Girona) and Daniel Navarro Martinez (Alicante).

In ‘We do not hate mathematics’, the Hoy por Hoy Alicante space dedicated to education, Lluis Bonet, the best secondary school teacher in Spain, has been able to chat with Dani Navarro who until last year attended second year of high school at the San Blas Institute and that just a few weeks ago he began his degree in Geology at the University of Alicante.

In the talk he told us how his interest in geology emerged, almost spontaneously, then channeled by his teacher Núria Sahagún. This young man has won two medals: one gold in the category of group research on the interrelationships between terrestrial systems; and another of silver, in a category called ‘Mission to Mars’ or ‘Mission to Mars’.

For Lluis, the case of Daniel Navarro shows how students and teachers can collaborate to awaken the scientific curiosity of the former.

In these tests, among other activities, the Spanish team was able to study the geology of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park and was able to tour the city of Girona to learn about the presence of the so-called ‘Girona stone’ in nearby quarries and in some historical buildings.

In addition, they were also in Banyoles and in the Espacio AQUAE center in Caldes de Malavella.
