Veteran Brazilian international full-back Dani Alves, accused of rape in Spain, decided not to appeal his decision to appear before the court, not to delay his trial, despite his skepticism about the facts of the case.

Alves, who has been in pretrial detention since January, appeared on Wednesday afternoon before an investigating judge in Barcelona, who informed him of his referral to a court where he will be prosecuted for “sexual assault”, a criminal category that in Spain includes rape, according to the Catalan Supreme Court in a statement.

The former Barcelona star, and Paris Saint-Germain, was arrested after he was accused of raping a young woman in a nightclub bathroom in late December.

During his appearance on Wednesday before the investigating judge, the latter explained to the 40-year-old the “criminal elements” gathered in the investigation, which, according to her, justified his referral to court, according to what the statement added, which did not specify any date for the trial.

In a statement sent to Agence France-Presse, Alves’ defense added that the player denied during his appearance the “narrative of the facts”, which, in his view, were inappropriate with the facts that occurred, and the defense added: Despite everything, he indicated that he would not resort to appeal, in order to “accelerate” the procedures. Not to delay the trial.

And Alves became without a club, after the Mexican Yumas decided to terminate his contract as a result of the accusation against him.

The Brazilian was arrested without bail, because the court investigating him felt that it risked his escape if he was released from prison.

When the story came to light and before he was suspended, Alves pleaded his innocence in a television interview and denied knowing the woman. However, when interrogators questioned him after his arrest, he changed his story and insisted that what happened was consensual.
