Maybe we often see drivers of ladder frame SUVs like the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport or Toyota Fortuner speeding on the toll road. Not infrequently they drive their cars to high speeds and swerve to avoid other vehicles.
In fact, some even ‘beat’ the shoulder of the road so they can keep speeding. Such actions are certainly dangerous for the driver himself and other road users.
Driving safety practitioner and Director of Training Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI) Sony Susmana said that SUV ladder frame cars should not be used as vehicles for speeding on toll roads. Not without reason, because a car with large dimensions can lose stability if driven at high speed on the toll road.
“Large SUV vehicles generally have a ladder frame chassis, the chassis and body are not fused or separated. This means that the body of the car on this type of chassis is placed on top of the chassis and then connected. You could say that the shape is taller or taller. So there are symptoms of unsteadiness or “The bounce that occurred was bigger,” said Sony to detikOto, Monday (8/1/2024).
Sony continued, when used for speeding on toll roads, the stability may not be as good as a vehicle with a monocoque chassis type. Unstable vehicle stability at high speeds can affect handling and can have fatal consequences if the driver is not alert.
“This body shape has the character of catching the wind, especially at high speeds. Even though it has been designed by experts, there are still tolerance limits,” said Sony.
The risk that often occurs when driving a large SUV at high speed is that it skids or even easily overturns. This can be caused by wind blowing from the front or side.
“If we’re talking about speeding, it’s possible, after all, the power from the engine is big. And there are SUV cars racing on the circuit. But those have been modified. Meanwhile, these standard vehicles are designed only for highways which prioritize comfort,” he said.
