Danger of forest fires in Bavaria: Observation flights from Thursday

Due to the current high risk of forest fires in large parts of Lower Franconia, the government is launching observation flights. This was announced by a spokesman on BR request. After examining the situation, the government of Lower Franconia, in consultation with foresters, decided today to send the observation planes into the air on Thursday afternoon.

On Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. in Mainbullau in Miltenberg and at the same time from Schweinfurt-Süd. Further flights from Hettstadt and Hassfurt are planned for Friday afternoon. In addition to Lower Franconia, the government of the Upper Palatinate also flies observation flights over eastern Bavaria at the weekend.

“High risk of forest fires” at nine out of twelve locations in Lower Franconia

The aim is to detect fires as early as possible in an emergency and to raise the alarm quickly. According to the current WBI forest fire risk index of the German Weather Service (DWD), the forest fire risk in Lower Franconia is currently high: Nine out of twelve Lower Franconian locations report level 4, “high risk”, such as Bad Kissingen, Würzburg, Bad Königshofen, Kitzingen and Lohr-Halsbach. The highest level 5, “very high risk”, is forecast for tomorrow for the Kahl am Main location.

Barbecuing on an open fire is prohibited in Gemünden

In the district of Main-Spessart there is already an absolute fire ban everywhere in Gemünden, Karlstadt and Eussenheim. The ban also applies there in existing, permanent fireplaces – without exception. Depending on the situation, the municipalities in Bavaria may issue a fire ban.

The city of Gemünden asks for the understanding of the population despite the barbecue weather: In view of the extremely high risk of fire, it feels obliged to ban any kind of open fire without exception. The ban also prohibits campfires on private property and the use of barbecues. This does not apply to gas or electric grills, insofar as they are self-contained and no flame is visible from the outside.
