Background

Dan Schneider, renowned creator and producer of several well-known Nickelodeon shows, including “The Amanda Show,” “Drake & Josh,” “Zoey 101,” “iCarly,” and “Victorious,” has recently filed a defamation lawsuit against the producers of the highly acclaimed Investigation Discovery docuseries, “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.”

The five-episode series explores the alleged abuse and misconduct that occurred within Nickelodeon, garnering it the distinction of being Max’s biggest streaming title to date.

The Lawsuit

The legal complaint, acquired by Variety and filed by Schneider’s attorneys, Jana Moser and Richard McKie, argues that the portrayal of Schneider in “Quiet on Set” is a deliberate character assassination. The lawsuit states that Schneider had no knowledge of the abuse perpetrated by two confirmed child sexual abusers and condemns any implication of Schneider being a child sexual abuser himself.

According to the lawsuit, the series’ voiceovers, graphics, and trailer intentionally make false statements that Schneider was involved in criminal activities and repeatedly suggest his guilt, harming both his reputation and legacy. Schneider asserts that the producers chose to prioritize clickbait and ratings to the detriment of accuracy.

Allegations and Respective Responses

“Quiet on Set” details various allegations made against Schneider, such as him fostering a hostile work environment and sexualizing former child actors during his time at Nickelodeon. However, a representative for Schneider informed Variety that the alleged scenes were attentively reviewed and approved by a team before being aired worldwide. They further added that the scenes continue to be enjoyed by children and parents alike.

Schneider, accepting responsibility for past mistakes, expressed remorse and a willingness to apologize to those who were affected. He emphasized his desire to address his failures as a boss but maintained that the series incorrectly suggested his involvement in heinous acts perpetuated by genuine child predators.

Claims and Legal Action

The lawsuit filed by Schneider focuses on the portrayal of him in “Quiet on Set” and the resulting false conclusions drawn by viewers. Schneider aims to set the record straight to protect his reputation and the exceptional individuals who contributed to the creation of Nickelodeon shows.

Complicity of Others

The docuseries not only investigates Schneider but also includes dialogue and acting coach Brian Peck, the alleged perpetrator of sexual abuse against “Drake & Josh” star, Drake Bell. Arrested on multiple charges, including sodomy and lewd acts upon a child, Peck has faced past legal repercussions.

Other individuals mentioned in the series are Jason Michael Handy, a former production assistant, who faced charges of lewd acts with a child, and animator Ezel Channel, who received a prison sentence for committing indecent acts on a minor.
