Dame mit Fächer: Gustav Klimt’s Last Portrait Sets European Auction Record

Dame mit Fächer (Lady with fan) has been auctioned at Sotheby’s for an amount of 74 million pounds (86 million euros). That is a record for an auction in Europe. The painting is Gustav Klimt’s last portrait. It was on his easel when he died unexpectedly in 1918, barely 55 years old. At the time, he was one of the most influential portraitists in Europe, thanks to the color opulence of his ‘golden period’.

After Klimt’s death, the painting came into the hands of the Viennese entrepreneur and patron of the arts Erwin Böhler and his brother. The Austrian collector Rudolf Leopold bought it in 1957 and sold it in 1994 to the current owners, who wish to remain anonymous.

The previous record for a European auction was held by Alberto Giacometti and his sculpture Walking Man I. It was sold in 2010 for £65 million.
