Dallas ISD is the home of Elena and David Bates – learn about their love story

Elena and David Bates have been married for 16 years. Their love story began when they both worked at Thomas C. Marsh Middle School and ran student groups and supported community associations.

David began his career with Dallas ISD in 1999 as a leadership cadet corps instructor, coach, and leader at Marsh Middle School. He is a veteran of the United States Army and is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance and Facilities Services / Construction Services Support.

Ellen joined Dallas ISD as an English as a Second Language teacher at Marsh Middle School in 2000. She then transitioned to WT White High School, where she served in various capacities. She returned to Marsh Preparatory Academy as an assistant principal in 2015 and was later selected as the principal of WT White in 2016, where she remained until obtaining her current position in the Office of Transformation and Innovation.

Laney Bates, their 13-year-old daughter, attended Everette L. DeGolyer Elementary School and Marsh Middle School, now known as Thomas C. Marsh Preparatory Academy.

“Dallas ISD is like home to us because we are dedicated to the success of the district,” Elena said. “The ups and downs of the district we feel personally.”

His commitment to the district is reflected in his daily work. Elena is a key member of the team dedicated to opening public schools of choice, bringing more educational experiences to district students.

David’s work can be seen daily in all schools as he and his team are responsible for the maintenance and operations of the schools and administrative office buildings. In October 2019, David led the team of heroes who acted quickly to clean up schools in North and Northwest Dallas that were affected by the tornado so that students could return as soon as possible.

“We have many memories and experiences that we have shared through our service and the community, instead it has also helped us and our daughter,” said David. “During our years of service to the Dallas ISD school communities, we have built lasting relationships with colleagues, students, and their families. We are honored to call Dallas ISD our HOME! ”.
