Dairy Consumption May Be Linked to Cancer, New Study Warns

An 11-year mega-study has revealed that some components of milk could be related to the suffering of some types of cancer

After a moderate number of studies that have tried to show whether the consumption of dairy products has a negative or positive effect on the risk of certain types of cancer, a group of researchers from the University of Oxford has carried out an 11-year mega-study with the participation of 500 thousand people, yielding some findings.

The study published in the journal BMC Medice, which aimed to investigate the associations of habitual consumption of dairy products in the incidence of cancer, was compiled through an exhaustive follow-up for more than a decade in 10 different areas of China.

In this way, it was found that approximately 20 percent of the participants, that is, 29,777 people, developed cancer. And specifically, regular consumption of these dairy foods was associated with an increased risk of liver cancer and female breast cancer.

In addition, it was determined that the components of milk may be involved in the development of carcinogenic processes. In such a way that it can be said that a higher consumption of dairy products induces high levels of a hormone (IGF-I) that has been implicated in the development of cancer, in the same way, the fatty acids of this type of food are linked to risk factors for liver cancer and lymphoma. Finally, the study indicates that fat-soluble hormones present in milk could be associated with breast cancer.

On the other hand, and despite the results described, the findings should be taken with caution, since it does not mean, -for now-, that these foods are harmful to health since they provide important nutrients for the body, in addition to having It is clear that cancer is a multifactorial disease and, therefore, requires the tuning of different triggering factors.

The authors of the study that can be read in full at https://bit.ly/3FI9aL5 They stated that “further studies are needed to validate these current findings, establish whether these associations are causal, and investigate the possible underlying mechanisms involved.”

It should be noted that among the risk factors for cancer are: age, sex, region, family history of cancer, education, income, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, consumption of soy and fresh fruit and body mass index.
