Construction of Daegu Urban Railway Line 4 (EXCO Line) is expected to speed up with final approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Daegu City plans to begin full-scale construction, including starting detailed design services, with the goal of completion in 2030.

On the 13th, Daegu City announced that the basic plan for the urban railway Line 4 construction project received final approval from the Metropolitan Transportation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 6th. Accordingly, the city plans to order basic and detailed design services within this year and begin construction in 2026.

Line 4 runs a 12.6km section from Suseong-gu Community Stadium Station to Esiapolis in Dong-gu via Kyungpook National University and EXCO. The project cost is 775.6 billion won (446.6 billion won in government funds and 329 billion won in city funds).

Line 4 applied for a preliminary feasibility study in August 2018 and passed the preliminary feasibility study in December 2020. Subsequently, the basic plan establishment service was launched in May 2021, and consultations were held with related organizations, including public hearings for residents, listening to the opinions of the city council, and adjusting the total project cost of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.

In this process, as controversy arose over ‘EXCO Line without EXCO’ and ‘Kyungpook National University Station without Kyungpook National University’, the number of stations increased and the locations of some stations were also adjusted. Daegu City added Gyeongdaegyo Station and Gonggo Negeori Station, increasing the number of stations from 10 at the time of the pre-tat to 12. In addition, accessibility was improved by adjusting the locations of EXCO Station, Gyeongdae Bukmun Station, and Bokhyeon Ogeori Station.

The vehicle type, which was promoted as a monorail like Line 3 at the time of the preliminary test, was changed to a steel-wheeled automated guided vehicle (AGT) and passed the adequacy verification by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Through this process, the total project cost increased by 104.5 billion won from 671.1 billion won to 775.6 billion won.

The location of the vehicle base was also changed from Bongmu IC, where controversy arose over environmental destruction, to the site of a former slaughterhouse in Geomdan-dong, Buk-gu. Traces of a Level 2 endangered wild species were found near Bongmu IC, and this was the result of taking into account the future expansion of the vehicle base.

Beomeo Station and Dongdaegu Station, where you can transfer to Urban Railway Lines 1 and 2, have changed from the ‘indirect transfer’ method of transferring through the ticket gate to the ‘direct transfer’ method that does not require you to exit the ticket gate. When Line 4 opens, the number of Daegu Urban Railway transfer stations will increase to 6, adding Suseong-gu Community Stadium Station, Beomeo Station, and Dongdae Station to the existing 3 (Myeongdeok Station, Cheongna Hill Station, and Banwoldang Station). In addition, it is expected that organic connection between lines 1 to 4 will be possible, which will help revitalize the use of urban railways.

Kim Dae-young, director of the Daegu City Transportation Bureau, said, “With the approval of the basic plan for Line 4, a new route has been provided to the eastern and northern regions of Daegu, which are blind spots for urban railways,” and added, “A foundation for growth that will create jobs and revitalize the local economy has been laid.” did.
