For D66, climate, education and “a fair economy” are the spearheads in the elections. Outgoing State Secretary Vijlbrief, chairman of the committee that prepared the election programme, presented the program this morning. Party leader Jetten said that this is the time to make choices that have been postponed for too long.

As far as D66 is concerned, the Netherlands must be climate neutral by 2040 – the current outgoing cabinet assumes 2050. All fossil subsidies must be abolished and the largest polluters will be taxed higher. D66 should also provide one card with which you can travel outside rush hour on public transport for 49 euros.

Furthermore, everyone receives a fixed amount of 250 euros per year to compensate for the higher pollution costs (a “climate bonus”). D66 wants to further introduce driving charges. Short-distance flying is becoming more expensive and Lelystad airport will definitely not open.

The program also states that radical choices are needed in the areas of food and agriculture. The party is committed to halving nitrogen emissions by 2030. The position of farmers in relation to the food and beverage industry must be strengthened.

Career boost

D66, which has profiled itself for years as the educational party par excellence, now wants to continue investing in education. The party believes that the scholarship for MBO students should be as high as that for students in higher education.

Furthermore, a fixed sum of money must be available for everyone over the age of 25 to continue developing after their studies. The party speaks of “a career boost” that can amount to up to 50,000 euros for MBO students.

The election manifesto also states that people with a middle income should pay less tax. Like many other parties, D66 wants to increase the minimum wage. The burden must be shifted from work to pollution and power.

Free childcare

The party also advocates the possibility that working parents can take a total of one year of paid leave together. Childcare should be free. D66, in its own words, “unlike the left-wing parties”, also insists on less regulatory burden for small entrepreneurs and more investments in clean companies.

Regarding migration, the program states, among other things, that the core of the policy is in Europe. But “a coherent European asylum and migration policy is missing”. According to the program, the current plans are too non-binding and the number of places is too low. D66 wants a “fair distribution” for the reception of refugees across all EU member states. As far as D66 is concerned, all promising asylum seekers must be redistributed.

D66 is also calling for the elected prime minister again. There must also be a binding corrective referendum. The number of Members of the House of Representatives will be expanded to at least 260.

The program is still a concept at the moment. The members will finalize the decision at the party’s conference next month.
