D66 members express their support for nitrogen plans at party congress

Governing party D66 wants nitrogen agreements to be fully implemented, despite criticism from provinces and farmers. This became apparent at the party congress in Den Bosch. “In our country, the rules of the rule of law apply, not the right of the trigger”, said party chairman Jan Paternotte. Party leader Kaag complimented VVD minister Van der Wal that, despite threats, she ‘sticks to what she knows is right’.

“Don’t be paralyzed by simmering provinces”, Paternotte called on the cabinet. “This cabinet finally dares to take action and will halve emissions by 2030.”

Paternotte called the Netherlands ‘the meat factory of the world’. “The nitrogen emissions here are so high that nature is destroyed and the judge forbids us to build more homes.” That is why nitrogen emissions must be reduced quickly, he said. He also believes that nature must be restored, farmers must be offered a sustainable alternative and houses must be built for young people.

In addition, the party chairman said that ‘misbehavior of threatening farmers’ should not be rewarded. He thinks that foreman Mark van den Oever of Farmers Defense Force is going beyond all limits. “In our country, the rules of the rule of law apply, not the law of the tractor.”

‘Threats unacceptable’

During the conference, Minister Kaag praised VVD minister Christianne van der Wal (Nature and Nitrogen) in her speech. “In a difficult situation and under great pressure, she sticks to what is right.”

Kaag also said that it was unacceptable that intimidation, insult and threats are the order of the day. “We must all guard this border.” Subsequently, the D66 leader denounced the threats against, among others, mayor Halsema, historian Nadia Bouras and virologist Marion Koopmans. Kaag spoke of ‘misogyny of medieval forms’.

The D66 members also appeared to support the nitrogen plans earlier this afternoon. They unanimously approved a motion calling on the House of Representatives to support Minister Van der Wal’s plan. The adoption of the motion led to applause from the members.
