PRAGUE – One of the best Czech swimmers, Simona Kubová, ended her competitive career at the age of 32.

The elite breaststroker competed at the Olympic Games in London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, she has medals from the European Championships and the World Championship in short swimming. ČTK confirmed the information about the end of Kubová’s career.

With six championships, the record holder of the Czech Swimmer of the Year poll was supposed to compete at the World Championships in Doha in February, but three weeks before the start she unfortunately broke a rib in a fall and had to miss the championship for the first time since 2009. In the end, she also gave up trying to participate in the Summer Olympics in Paris.

“I’ve been retiring for about five years, the injury, of course, hastened it. I simply said to myself that the time was right.” said Kubová to ČTK.

The Olympic maximum of the Chomutov native will thus remain the 10th place in the 100 from London 2012. She was sixth on the same track at the 2013 World Championships, and a year earlier she won the European bronze. She has the same metal from the World Championships in the short pool, from the continental championships under her maiden name, Baumrtová brought home ten medals, including gold in the 50m in 2013.

“I value the title of European champion, the bronze from the World Championships in the short pool and the tenth place from the Olympics the most. There were also moments when something didn’t work out, but that’s part of sports. I would have done something better, something, unfortunately, didn’t work out health-wise, but I don’t regret anything in retrospect,” said Kubová.

Kubová planned the end of her career already after the postponed Olympics in Tokyo, but the professional league ISL gave her new motivation, in which she celebrated the overall victory with the Energy Standard team in 2021. There she also began working with Canadian coach Tom Rushton in his strong international group.

At last year’s World Championships in Fukuoka, she advanced twice to the semi-finals and won the 35th individual title at the national championships. The Czech record holder came close to the Olympic limit on all three flagging courses to 18 hundredths.

“I train children in Kadani, now I will work as a physiotherapist for some time. We will see if I can find a job, for example, in accounting, for which I am now retraining.” added Kubová, who will be a candidate for a position in the athletes’ commission of the International Olympic Committee during the Paris Games.
