cycles – not in the mood for care today

How do you organize yourself in everyday life?

The center of our life has been Hamburg Altona for several years: the daycare center Schatztruhe, my studio on Schomburgstraße and our apartment on Harkortstraße, everything is close together. We don’t want to leave here anymore. Other parents have become our friends, my most important allies in the urban jungle. We organize our lives together, rarely just pick up our own children from daycare, go shopping and meet up at playgrounds or on the banks of the Elbe. I just love driving into Ottensen and knowing that someone is always there for me. For me and the kids.

do you have a car

Yes, but that is only used when we drive to my parents on the outskirts of Großhansdorf in Schleswig-Holstein, where I grew up. In our small universe we make every journey with the muli motor. A total of three mules were stolen from me. With every theft, I’ve traded up – now I don’t want to do without the pedal assistance anymore.

You’ve been a mule driver from the very beginning. What has changed?

I have changed. In Großhansdorf I had my own car. The distance to the outdoor pool in Grossensee – I wanted to be cool and pick up my friends in the car. In Altona, a car now only means stress when looking for a parking space or costs for the garage and fuel. These are all resources we need for our family. There is now the first bike route directly through Altona, some bike paths have been improved. Not only the muli grows with us. The city too.

What do you wish for the next few years?

I want to be able to say more often when I’m not in the mood for care. I want care work to be seen as equal to paid work. I want more space for myself again – without giving up because of my role as a mother, without part-time work and poverty in old age. Maybe one day I want a third child. The most important thing is that we all keep evolving. That we don’t stand still.

Thank you for the talk!
