Cyberpunk 2077 and the Overdue Patch: Backstory Sheds Light on Why

Yesterday evening CD Project RED announced it postponement of patch 1.2 to second half of March due to the hacker attack that hit it in recent weeks. The software house did not go into details, but as in the hours following the communication, i background on the genesis of the decision. According to what was reconstructed by Bloomberg, who spoke to people close to the facts (obviously anonymous), the patch delay is due to a simple fact: most developers, forced to work remotely due to COVID regulations, has been unable to access workstations for the past two weeks.

The attack on CD Projekt RED in fact occurred by means of a ransomware who encrypted the contents on the network. The software house refused to pay the attacker in order to obtain the keys to decrypt their files and therefore essentially had to restore all systems via backup.

The process obviously took time and the employees, remotely, they couldn’t connect to the corporate VPN to access the tools they needed to do their jobs. “Despite the unplanned vacation,” Bloomberg writes, “the hack was a nightmare for the employees. The attackers may have accessed their personal information, including national identification numbers and passport details“.

CD Projekt RED would then ask employees not only to report the security breach to interested parties, but also to send their computers to IT staff to scan for malware or other intrusions. When it is said that caution is never too much …

In short, the delay does not seem an excuse to take time but a real need linked to what has happened in recent weeks. It always rains in the wet, after the many (and fair) criticisms for the “old gen” version of the title that overwhelmed it, even the hacker attack: the Polish company will have to work hard to recover the trust of users, undoubtedly a tough test in recent months.
