Cyberpunk 2077 a goldmine: billions roll in

CD Projekt RED has today presented the estimated result for the financial year 2020. It reveals a record turnover of 2.14 billion Polish zlotys, which is equivalent to 4.7 billion kroner. The net result ended at 2.55 billion kroner.

Largest in Europe

In May 2020, the Polish company was valued at over eight billion dollars and passed with Ubisoft as the largest video game company in Europe.

The revised results will be published on 22 April, but it is unlikely that they will deviate significantly from the estimated result.

In comparison, CD Projekt RED last year had a profit of NOK 1.15 billion, net NOK 385 million. With the release of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt in 2015, the studio achieved revenues of NOK 1.75 billion and a net profit of NOK 750 million.

Childbirth with birth pains

Cyberpunk 2077 came last year and has contributed greatly to the result. Despite being launched in early December, it managed to sell 13 million units before Christmas.

Despite birth pains on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles and an otherwise somewhat complicated birth, Cyberpunk 2077 was a very successful launch for CD Project RED. Industry analysts at SuperData said earlier this year that Cyberpunk 2077 was the biggest launch of digital games ever. Not even the refunds affected the total sales to a significant degree.

The Polish game developer is still improving Cyberpunk 2077. The goal is to continue selling the game and upcoming versions for many years to come. Update 1.21 came earlier this week on all platforms and with a bunch of repairs and improvements in the candy bag.

CD Projekt RED is also developing new free downloadable content and next-generation console update for Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt will also be updated in the second half of 2021 with beam tracking, faster loading times, visual and other and technical improvements.
