Cumbre Vieja: The La Palma volcano enters a more explosive phase | Society

The lava from the La Palma volcano continues its unstoppable, albeit slow, advance. The magma has devastated more than 105 hectares of land in which there were about 200 private homes, as well as other buildings, crops and plots. The emergency teams have detected that the volcano has entered an explosive phase, which, although it does not have to be more dangerous, will cause intense ash eruptions. However, the new phase also entails the advance of the lava tails that reach a speed of between 30 and 50 meters per minute

The number of evacuees due to volcanic activity is around 6,000 people, among which are the inhabitants of Todoque. The municipality of La Palma, which was out of danger at first, was completely evicted on the last day. After the evacuation, the magma has entered the municipal area and has come to form columns up to ten meters high, which have devastated a large part of the town. Neighbors and authorities remain alert to a building that could act as a parapet, preventing the lava tails from destroying the entire town. However, it is expected that the magma that the advance of the magma ends up exceeding the locality.

One of Todoque’s neighbors, Yomaira Medina, told Hora 25 about the experience of leaving home with hardly being able to collect personal effects. “In theory our area was free of danger, until last night. We have come out with what we are wearing. We must be prepared to tell the children: look, we no longer have a home,” he declared. The authorities of the neighborhoods and municipalities of La Palma have already set up bank accounts and bizum so that those who so wish can make personal donations with which to deal with the damage caused by the volcano. The Canarian authorities estimate that the damage from the volcanic eruption will exceed 400 million euros.
