Cultural Events for Families: A Beautiful Tradition at Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater

“We are starting such a new additional direction as creating cultural events directly for families, people with children, especially for young people, I think it will be a beautiful tradition,” says Dana Bjorka, manager of Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater.

“We want to associate this season with the theme of power, and power is hidden both in money and power over people and power over the situation, tyranny, and we came to the conclusion that every premiere that we will offer to our viewers in the year of our anniversary will be related to this, unfortunately today’s very relevant topic,” says Bjorka about the season.

Director Dacei Pūcei has been entrusted with creating a theater production for the first time and also finding a creative team. Together with composer Zani Dombrovska and actress Jelena Sigova, they created an original work about the legendary hero Robin Hood.

“I realized that I would tell my story, how a legend is born, what happens in his path when he becomes a legend,” says Dace Puce about the show. She notes that it is important both how a leader emerges and how a person uses power – one uses it to benefit oneself, the other to make others happy.

“I try to make a show that is interesting for me, dynamic, which is gorgeous. It uses both stunt tricks and a lot of humor, dance, choreography. It is important that the ending is positive, so that the people who leave the Chekhov Theater are half a meter from the ground, with a positive charge,” says the director.

Composer Zane Dombrovska notes: “It was a whole adventure, and it was an opportunity to play all the roles myself. It was a very exciting time, and this was the time when the music had to find a place right in the dramaturgical material, because otherwise we would not be able to weave the way we are woven in now. When we wrote the scenes, we already knew the places we wanted to go out directly with the music.”

The composer admits that she did not want to create the aesthetics of a museum, but nostalgia for the Middle Ages with today’s understanding: “I tried to mix those two languages, today’s language and the instruments typical of that time. I thought it was a very interesting fact that I did not know before the harp was born from the bowstring. That’s why we’ve made a little bit of it, when Robin touches the string of his bow and that’s why the music starts playing.”

The main role is played by the Belarusian actor Ivan Streltsov. On what the character of Robin Hood teaches, he says:

“No matter how hard it is, don’t give up. No matter how bad things are for you, the day will come when it will be good, the sun will appear, a bird will fly away, you will remember yourself young. And to be kind, open and able to love, that’s the most important thing – to love.”
