Cuba reaffirms commitment to universal health at PAHO’s 60th Directing Council

Cuba participates in the 60th Directing Council of PAHO

Speaking this Monday at the opening day of the 60th session of the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), held in Washington, José Angel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health of Cuba, ratified to the member countries Cuba’s commitment to working together to achieve universal health in the Americas.

“Given the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, which multiplied the asymmetries and inequities that exist in many nations regarding medical care, “It is essential to design and implement actions from our Organization that allow these inequalities to end.”

In his speech, he highlighted that not even the death of millions of people in those difficult years of confronting the virus led to greater support from all governments to support resilient health systems, which guarantee everyone’s right to health and compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Humanity urgently demands that public health be considered by all governments as a right of all people and not as the privilege of a few.”

After sharing the experiences of our National Health System during those complex years, in which the country’s economic situation worsened, with a high impact on medical services, and how we were able to successfully overcome the epidemiological situation generated by the virus, we reiterate to the nations of the region Cuba’s willingness to continue providing medical care wherever we are needed.

“Working together continues to be the best way to ensure that our health systems are truly prepared to provide answers to the many and complex challenges that humanity faces,” he concluded.
