Land paquebot Seven Seas Splendor was going up the Gironde estuary when it caused, this Saturday, May 20, a wave of exceptional height, reports West France. This gigantic sea wave caused a lot of damage on the banks of the Ambès peninsula, ravaging the departmental road along the way, but also cellars, terraces and gardens. Individuals were also affected.

For the inhabitants of the town of Saint-Louis-de-Montferrand, bordered by the ocean, this wave has been compared to a “tsunami”. Two of them saw their house completely flooded. “The wall of water split the terrace, tore the wooden slabs, flooded the cellar and destroyed a wall of concrete blocks in the garage”, explains a resident to France Blue Gironde, before adding: “It’s still extraordinary, when we are in the midst of a period of ecology, ecology, ecology, boats are damaging the banks, it is damaging homes, it is damaging the dikes, it is damaging everything. »

A similar incident in 2016

More than 70 people were mobilized this Monday, May 22 to help clean up the damage, but also the trunks and stones brought to the road by the wave, reports TF1 Info. The PS mayor of Saint-Louis-de-Montferrand has also decided, as a safety measure, to close departmental road 10, which has become impassable. This event is reminiscent of other floods that took place in 2016, when the boat Crystal Symphony had created similar waves in the estuary. The deputy director of the large maritime port of Bordeaux, for his part, made a point of presenting his apologies to the residents, while announcing the diligence of an investigation. “We need to cross-check different elements to determine the exact causes of this incident, because this phenomenon is extremely rare,” he explains to South West. The concern is however palpable for the inhabitants to five days of a new stopover of the boat.
