According to experts, COVID-19 destroys not only the lungs, but also other human organs.

According to scientists, coronavirus has a detrimental effect not only on the lungs, but also on other human organs.

According to Science, citing a study by cardiologist Harlan Krumholtz working at New Haven’s Hospital and Yale University, coronavirus can affect various organs, and the consequences can be catastrophic.

“The severity of this disease is striking and shocking,” he said.

According to the scientist, there is no clear understanding of the full picture of the effect of coronavirus on the body, despite the publication of a huge number of works on this problem.

According to the publication, after entering the human body through the nasopharynx, the virus copies itself, spreading in new cells. If the immune system cannot stop it, the virus enters the trachea and lungs, which is especially dangerous. As a result of the fight against it, the immune system disrupts the supply of oxygen to the body.

An autopsy of deceased patients shows that their pulmonary alveoli are filled with fluid, white blood cells and the remains of dead cells. According to one version, an excessively strong reaction of the immune system leads to this result – the so-called cytokine storm, during which the most powerful inflammatory processes occur, and immune cells begin to attack even healthy tissues. However, not all experts consider this version quite reasonable.

However, besides the lungs, the heart and blood vessels are under attack. According to some information, 20% of 416 patients infected with coronavirus and treated in Wuhan had signs of myocardial damage, and in 44% of 138 patients, doctors revealed arrhythmia. Dutch doctors found problems with blood coagulation in 38% of 184 coronavirus patients who were in intensive care, and almost one in three had blood clots that could not only block important arteries, but also enter the brain, causing a stroke.

“Blood clots have a serious impact on the severity of the disease and mortality from COVID-19,” said Benhuda Bikdeli, an employee at Columbia University Medical Center.

Experts also report a symptom such as ischemia of finger tissues, provoked by narrowing of blood vessels and a decrease in blood flow. As a result, finger swelling and tissue death can occur. However, to the end, the process of damage to the heart and blood vessels in coronavirus is not clear.

A number of studies suggest that coronavirus can affect the kidneys. For example, some patients hospitalized in Wuhan showed kidney failure, as well as blood and protein in the urine. In addition, viral particles were found in the kidneys of the dead.

Experts suggest that coronavirus threatens the brain and central nervous system: patients may lose consciousness. Also quite common is the loss of smell during illness. The cytokine storm mentioned above can lead to cerebral edema, and a stroke can occur due to increased blood coagulation.

A negative effect of COVID-19 on the intestines is noted. It turned out that up to half of patients with coronavirus can suffer from diarrhea. Conjunctivitis and liver damage are reported, which can also be affected by medications and the immune system. In this case, an objective picture of the effect of coronavirus on the human body can be obtained only after serious and lengthy studies.
