Critical care wards continue to fill up with nearly 3,000 patients

Statistical data continues to show the rapid spread of the coronavirus in France. Resuscitation services, where the number of patients with Covid-19 started to rise again at the end of November, are approaching 3,000 patients. The daily average of contamination settles, it, above 50,000, according to figures published Sunday by Public Health France.

Critical care services, where the most serious cases are treated, counted exactly 2,936 patients on Sunday, against 2,933 the day before. In total, 15,528 patients are hospitalized, against 15,370 the day before. The trend has been a clear increase over the past month, a period over which this figure has almost doubled (+ 97%).

Public Health France reports 48,473 new cases in 24 hours, the daily average over the last seven days exceeding 52,000 daily cases. The number of deaths since the start of the epidemic has reached 121,493.

Delta still exceeds Omicron

With the onset of the cold at the end of autumn, the epidemic resumed even before the Omicron variant spread in France, much more contagious than the Delta variant, still in the majority by far. To counter this fifth wave, the government intends to encourage more vaccination, by quickly presenting its bill to replace the health pass with a vaccination pass.

Vaccination will also be extended as soon as possible to 5-11 year olds, who transmit the disease even though they usually have mild symptoms of Covid-19. According to figures from the Directorate General of Health on Sunday, 52,509,598 people have received at least one injection (or 77.9% of the population), and 51,445,380 people have a complete vaccination schedule (76.3% ). More than 19.2 million booster doses have also been administered.
