Critic Mohamed Tarek, programmer of short films at the Dublin C Festival

The Dublin International Film Festival has announced its short film program for its next edition, which will run from 23 February to 4 March 2023.

Programmed by Egyptian critic and programmer Mohamed Tarek, in collaboration with Irish director and programmer Aisha Bolaghi, the Official Short Film Competition consists of 25 films, selected from over 750 short films presented at the festival, and the film list includes entries from from countries including Egypt, Lebanon and China, Ghana, Lebanon, Norway, Tunisia, Colombia and Tunisia.

About the program, Tarek and Bolaji said in a press release: “Through fiction and documentary films, animated films and experimental films, we review many experiences that delve into the telling of different stories, between folktales and myths, and between issues and contemporary topics, as well as films that explore themes such as adolescence, alienation and loss.” family and acceptance, having above all in mind the quality and freshness of the cinematic styles of films, and their genres ranging from comedy, horror, drama and fantasy. Festival Director Grania Humphreys said: ‘Short films have always been a vital part of the festival, both as a scouting for future talent and as a unique and vibrant art form.’

Mohamed Tarek is an Egyptian film critic and programmer, member of the Egyptian Film Critics Association, lives between Cairo and Dublin. Tarek is a film programmer for the El Gouna Film Festival and a short film programmer for the Dublin International Film Festival. In addition, he works as the cultural director of the Cinema for Development project at the Scientific and Cultural Renaissance Society (Cairo Jesuit).
