It is no longer a surprise that there is a lot of money circulating in sports. As every year, Forbes magazine has once again compiled a list of the top earners of the past calendar year at the end of 2023. The top 10 is once again dominated by footballers and led by Cristiano Ronaldo (38).

Although Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi (36) both turned their backs on European football in 2023 and allowed themselves to be transferred into footballing insignificance, they continue to play a crucial role in the list of the highest paid athletes of the year.

Like every year, Forbes magazine has published the list of top earners for 2023. Thanks to a well-paid contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo is the top international earner again for the first time since 2017. According to the magazine, the 2016 European champion earned around 126 million euros over the course of 2023.

Will Mbappe overtake Ronaldo and Messi with a new contract?

The Portuguese earned almost six million euros more than the Argentinian Messi in second place, who has been playing in the North American MLS for Inter Miami since last summer. There is also a footballer in third place: Kylian Mbappe (25), who played with Messi at Paris Saint-Germain until the summer, recorded around 111 million euros in income.

It is quite possible that Mbappe will earn more than his opponents next year, as the Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of June 2024. This means that the superstar can either get a new working paper at PSG or a high-paying contract with another club.

Neymar is missing from the ranking

It is quite surprising that Neymar, who, like Ronaldo, chose the route to Saudi Arabia, does not appear in the top 10. Apart from the three mentioned, there is no other footballer in the ranking. Roger Federer, who ranks ninth with earnings of 88 million euros, shows that despite his career being over, one can still be counted among the top earners just through his name.
