Creation of the Jamma Skulme Art Space. On the days of Jemma, we visit Mežaparks / LR1 / / Latvian Radio

Probably many journalists with an interest in art or the events of the Awakening years, with an interest in the Skulme family – Otto Skulmi or Marta Liepiņa-Skulmi, Uga Skulmi and, of course, about the artist Džemma Skulmi, have visited Mežaparks House, which was once built with more thought in mind. artists ’workshops rather than living.

On Jemma Skulme’s birthday – September 20, this house on Stockholm Street was opened to visitors, marking Jemma Skulme’s art space and the upcoming exposition “Moin, moin, Mālpils swallow!”. And this address is taken from a gymnasium letter to Jamma. The actor Gundars Āboliņš read it for those interested in Džemma’s Day, but the creator of this whole process, in cooperation with Džemma’s family, is art scientist Inga Šteimane.

Many journalists have visited Jamma Skulme. And also Cultural rondo The archive contains two very recent conversations in Jamma’s workshop. In 2015, when Siegfried Muktupāvels visited there, and In 2018, when I visited there to talk to Jemma about the upcoming exhibition in Valmiera “Cloud Pieces”.

We are in Jemma Skulme’s workshop, it is 2015. Significant, because Jemma is 90th anniversary this year, she is actively working, and only after a few years she will receive the first Purvītis Award for a lifetime contribution to art. It will be in 2019, and in November of the same year she will pass away at the age of 94.

Džemma Skulme’s art space in Mežaparks, arrangement of the archive, research and digitization, as well as the creation of the exposition take place in thinking about her centenary, which will be in 2025. Narrated by Inga Šteimane.

Until September 26, the First Jamma Days will take place in Mežaparks, which means that you can look into the future room, where from January 2022 the exposition “Moin, moin, Mālpils swallow” will be open. This is the story of high school student Džemma Skulmi, who entered the 1st Riga State Gymnasium in 1937 and graduated in 1944.

Teenager Džemma lives in a beautiful world made up of her famous parents – painter and set designer Oto Skulme and sculptor Marta Liepiņa-Skulme. Jamma is one of the “golden youth” who speaks in Anšlavs Eglītis’ comedy in American jargon, like magic on bicycles, photography, watching theater and movies, and writing letters.

An important part of the exhibition will be the many letters that Jemma Skulme writes to her classmates and that she has written for her parents. Inga Šteimane emphasizes that, unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to find Jemma’s letters sent to one of the great authors of the letters. The word “for the time being” gives hope that it may still be there.

But for now, Gundars Āboliņš is reading letters addressed to the trusted listener Džemma.

The first solo exhibition of her grandson Arturs Dimiters “Family” was opened in the Jemma Skulme Art Space this week, but on September 25 and 26 creative workshops led by Arturs and painter Sigita Daugule, whose works were also appreciated by Džemma Skulme.

Family and family interests have always been important to Jamma Skulme, and it has probably been felt by many journalists who have had the opportunity to talk to Jamma.

Latvijas Radio invites to express its opinion on what is heard in the program and supports the discussion among the listeners, however, reserves the right to delete comments that violate the boundaries of dignified attitude and ethical conduct.
