Creating Dementia-Friendly Communities: The Power of Non-Drug Treatment

[Health Medical Network/Reporter Wang Guanting]With the aging society and the increase in the population with dementia, everyone has the opportunity to meet people with dementia around them. Creating a dementia-friendly environment is the goal of all countries. The goals set forth in the “Dementia Prevention and Care Policy Framework and Action Plan 2.0” of the Ministry of Health and Welfare are to build a dementia-friendly and supportive environment and to unite the strength of neighbors to protect the elderly and the elderly.

Friendly Communities Dementia’s first choice is non-drug treatment

The National Health Department actively promotes “dementia-friendly communities”, and the four major elements of a dementia-friendly community include: friendly residents, friendly organizations, friendly environment and social participation. Allow people with dementia and their caregivers to enter the community with confidence, so that they receive the respect, support and care they deserve, and have the opportunity to participate in their favorite community activities.

Liu Jianliang, director of the Department of Neurology at the Heping Maternity and Children’s Hospital of Taipei City United Hospital, said that in addition to drug treatment, the first choice for dementia care is non-drug treatment. In recent years, art and cultural venues across the country have successively responded to the promotion and provided dementia-friendly services, allowing families with dementia to participate in art and cultural activities with ease and peace of mind. Taipei United Medical Center promotes more than ten social prescriptions every year, cooperating with different museums and various friendly organizations. This year, it has extended the prescriptions for people with dementia to the Taipei Municipal Library and jointly launched the “Reading Prescriptions” for social prescriptions.

Read the three parts of the prescription to make volunteer communication training more solid

By organizing book clubs and online book fairs, we introduce rich resources such as library books and videos to families with dementia, so that caregivers can learn dementia care skills and knowledge through reading books. Participate in various activities provided by the library to help reduce the caregiver’s load. This is also the first reading prescription for dementia in Taiwan. This year’s reading prescription promotion model includes three parts:

1. Organize a “book club”, which uses a reading recommendation of a dementia-related care book and allows family members to read it. Then, under the leadership of professional medical staff, they can share their experiences or discuss doubts in the book.

2. Collect books related to dementia through professional medical staff, recommend good books, and put them on the Taipei Municipal Library website. The joint medical terminal will also promote the link to the website to reach more families with dementia and the general public. Benefit from the library as a public resource.

3. Dementia education and training for volunteers: Provide entry-level and advanced dementia education and training for library volunteers. Through the understanding of dementia in the initial courses, library service volunteers can understand and identify with dementia. For people with dementia, through advanced courses, volunteers can have actual contact with people with dementia, allowing volunteers to understand the STE2P skills of communication and interaction with people with dementia (Smile, Thank You, and Eye Contact) , Embracing the moment, Patience).
