Crazy Russian attack, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine catches fire

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, catches fire due to incessant shelling Russia in Enerhodar City, Ukrainetoday, Friday (4/3).

The mayor of Enerhodar, Dmytro Orlov, said that the fire broke out after intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian authorities do report that Russia is continuing to step up efforts to seize the nuclear power plant. Russian tanks reportedly ran over the road around the nuclear power plant, but were blocked by local residents.

Hundreds of Ukrainians reportedly blocked a major road leading to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Videos on social media showed people huddled together waving Ukrainian flags.

Apart from putting up their bodies, Ukrainians also parked garbage trucks along the road so that Russian troops could not move closer to the nuclear power plant.

“We affirm our position that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is under strict protection, that the citizens and workers of Enerhodar are under the Ukrainian flag,” Orlov said. CNN.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has asked the IAEA for assistance to help maintain nuclear power plants in its country after Russia claimed to have succeeded in controlling these sites.

The IAEA confirmed that it received a request from Ukraine “to provide immediate assistance to coordinate activities related to the security of Chernobyl and other nuclear facilities.”

The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, told CNNthe request came after Russia notified the agency.

In the notification, Russia reported that their troops had taken control of two areas of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant, namely Zaporizhzhia and Chernobyl.

According to Grossi, Russia informed the IAEA that their personnel “continue to maintain nuclear security and monitor radiation in normal operations. Radiation levels are also under normal circumstances.”

However, the Ukrainian side emphasized that they still have full control over all nuclear power plants in the former Soviet Union.
